General Shelton is a member of the Board of Directors of the Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., Red Hat, Inc., Ceramic Protection Corporation and Robbins-Gioia, in addition to 4 private companies. He also serves as Executive Director of the General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center at North Carolina State University and serves as a Director of the Hugh and Carolyn Shelton Military Neurotrauma Foundation.
General Shelton is a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1997 to 2001), who spent 38 years in a variety of command and staff positions. He holds the distinction of being the first special operations officer to hold the Nation’s top military position. Throughout his tenure as chairman, he worked tirelessly on behalf of service members, their families and military retirees by championing a number of landmark quality of life initiatives, including the largest pay raise in 18 years, and critical improvements in both retirement and healthcare programs.
General Shelton received a Bachelor’s Degree in Textiles from North Carolina State University and a Master's Degree from Auburn University. He has attended Harvard University, the Air Command and Staff College and the National War College. In 2001, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and he received the Congressional Gold Medal in 2002.
